Hibak ALI

Hi I'm Hibak. I’m 14 years old and I’m representing blue borough and all the young people in our developing community. I am running for Young Mayor because I’d like to make our borough more active for young people.

I think I am more in touch with the Lewisham borough because I have lived in Catford all my life.

If elected, my main priority would be to renovate failing youth clubs in Lewisham. I believe there are far too few facilities for young people who enjoy performing and making music eg studios. I want to provide more performance opportunities for those who are talented.
I feel as though I am more conscious of our borough than anyone else running. So vote for me.

Siobhan BELL

My name is Siobhan Bell. I am standing because I feel that as a young person I will be a connection between young people and can provide a platform for young people to communicate their concerns and ideas throughout Lewisham. By doing so I hope to make positive, constructive and long lasting changes within the borough. Such as changes with the environment, health and education, and homeless issues. Also introducing workshops on sexual health, drugs or anger management. Events where young people can express their talents or more places where young people can “hang out” instead of being on the streets. More support is needed to be given to young people who are homeless and who need help with funds or managing school.
It is important to let people have new ideas and make their opinions heard. This could be shared through newsletters. I will also visit schools to show an interest in other students.
I believe I’m the best person for the job, as I love to listen and would like to be the first female to be successful as Young Mayor as well as bringing a new voice to Lewisham.

John BOSAH

My name is John Bosah. I stand today with a vision to improve the social and economic status of youths in Lewisham.
Firstly, I advocate safety on our buses after school. There have been many cases of students being bullied or mugged by gangs.
I am also proposing the introduction of activities that will bring together students from different backgrounds who share common interests, such as dancing, football, chess tournaments and lots more.
Moreover, I want to invite key officials to inspire our youths in sports and in making career choices so that their confidence and belief in success improves. This would build their foundations of motivations for their careers.
We can do it together. Vote for me. Flyers and essay competitions can also be used to feedback on activities and issues that arise. Inspired by real events so that youths can give their own opinions honestly and openly.
I am a motivator, reliable, compassionate and a good listener. I am the right choice. Let me bring understanding and hope.

Believe! It’s a foundation of prosperity!

Charlotte EVANS

I believe I’d be a great candidate for the Young Mayor - not only do I live in Lewisham, but feel there is potential for the community. I think young people of Lewisham deserve a voice, the right to be heard by everyone. I’ve important ideas that will involve every young person.
A main concern is that Lewisham would benefit from involving the community much more within music and art, such as promoting talents regularly and giving people access to facilities to express their talents, where people can come together, be heard together, and express themselves in their personal developments together.
The environment is a concern across the globe. Lewisham could become more involved with recycling and I’d promote schools to provide recycling system in school canteens and around the school areas. An interesting idea is to start workshops to help young people to have a full understanding about recycling and why it is such a great idea not only for Lewisham, but for the whole of London.
I believe that young people should not waste this fantastic chance at being heard, and having their say. I’ll listen to everyone and help make what you want reality.

Daniel FAMAKINWA

My name is Daniel and I’m interested in becoming Young Mayor because I have lived in Lewisham for seven years and seem to have a grip on the borough. I am a very friendly person and take part in a lot of activities which interest me including performing arts, music, football, cricket and basketball, also athletics. I am also a dancer / drummer and full time student.
I think I can offer a lot if elected because I am very close to the young people in our community. Also if elected the budget given to me would be used to better Lewisham borough by organising events, especially in performing arts and sports. Also I would use it to gear up youth clubs to get the bored youth of nowadays off the street and making them do something to help the community.
Being Young Mayor of Lewisham won’t be easy but by working together I hope to achieve these things and get youths off the streets. If elected I would bring changes for the good. So in the words of one school, Lewisham should strive for excellence.

Chandeep GREWAL

Hi. My name is Chandeep and I’m 16. I’m standing because I feel that it is important that views from children and different ethnic minorities are realised.
I will be endorsing sports. This is because I feel that it is important to give children other chances to go out and improve their fitness to ward off the threat of obesity and also to give them a chance to make friends and socialise.
Disabled facilities are also being neglected. I want people to become aware of the lack of support to this and contribute through providing sports, school and home facilities.
To let you know what’s going on I’ll produce a newsletter and also host my own website where people will be able to communicate with me and also have their decisions taken into account by using polls.
So please vote for me so that I have a chance to make changes for something I feel so strong about.

Ryan GRIFFITH

Hi, my name is Ryan, aged fourteen. I want to stand for Young Mayor because I want to have a say in how the borough of Lewisham is run.
I want young people to have different opportunities in life by organising permanent youth clubs and facilities, where your talents are appreciated.
I can’t promise everything, but I can guarantee everything will change. Changes I want to see are mainly to do with health and environmental issues.
Most youths complain because there is never anything to do, they never have any money. I would know because I’m a youth who experiences these situations.
Whenever something new goes on, I will make sure you will always know about it.
I am a young black female and I feel I have the voice young people of Lewisham borough need.

Jasmine JARVIS

Hi, my name is Jasmine but you can call my Jazzie. I want the chance for your voices to be heard. As a teenager growing up in Lewisham, I can understand your wants, needs and queries.
If chosen as Young Mayor, I will do everything in my power to make living in Lewisham a more exciting and beneficial experience for us all. I plan to set up different activities for a whole wide variety of tastes. This will include a legalised area for youths where you can express yourselves through aerosol art in a safe and legal environment. Also, possible performing arts groups such as bands, acting or dancing groups and art projects. I think that one of the most important things in life is to have fun and not be scared to be yourself.
As Young Mayor, this is what I would focus on. Giving you all the equal opportunities to be who you are and have fun while you’re doing it. A chance for tomorrow’s adults to express themselves, yourselves. So why not show everybody know who you are and let everybody hear your voice? Go on, vote Jazzie!

Maddy KIRKMAN

Hey my name is Maddy K. and I’m fed up with Lewisham. I want to change things - for you.
Firstly, I swim a lot for my club and I love all sports, so would do everything to improve facilities, for young people. I am also a member of the Woodcraft folk an organisation that fights for peace and environmental awareness. I want to bring this kind of action further into our community and make more space and time for youth groups. I’m passionate about music and love to have a laugh and want to continue Wilf’s work on gigging spaces and better things for us lot to do.
I would like people to know that I am visually impaired, and while I am still an outgoing and confident person, I want to make disabled access better for others.
If I were elected I would have an email for you to send your ideas or complaints so I can do the best for everyone. I would use the Young Mayor magazine to tell everyone what we’ve been up to.
Anyway I’m just a teenager like you. But I am willing to listen to you and stand up to change things - for you.

Daniel LYDON

Hi my name is Daniel Lydon and I’m fourteen years old. Kids today have a bad reputation among adults who thing we’re always up to no good and clamp down on us. If elected, I would want to work with adults and young people to get rid of this reputation.
Environmentally, I would make Lewisham a better and fun place to live. To do so I would try to get more funds towards bowling, skating, cinemas, etc.
Safety is also a big issue for me. For example, there was a young person in my area who got stabbed in an alley-way. This would not have happened if there were more CCTV cameras and police on foot patrols. I would want to make sure that more funds were put towards this.
I want to be Young Mayor because I am wanting to go into politics when older to make a difference. So making the lives of young people in Lewisham better would be a good start.
This is my dream. If you make it a reality I will be able to hear your dreams. And make them a reality too.

Asher MOODIE

Youth of Lewisham, my name is Asher Moodie and I want to be your Young Mayor in 2006/7.
I guess you’re wondering why I should become Young Mayor. Well I see a window of opportunity for Lewisham opening up. New benefits for the community like sporting events for us sports fanatics. Also more sophisticated music with the use of ICT to make it more accessible to those more into the producing side of the music business. And performing arts stages where you can show your skills.
If I am elected I will put your ideas forward and make them a reality. They say the sky’s the limit with our community but we can reach much higher. We are a collective people and with our brain and my power we will shine like the morning star.
So vote for a person who will take us to a higher level. Vote for Asher!

Charlie MOORE

What are the problems for young people? Well there are lots of problems and issues. However, many of these are overlooked and we’re the ones that suffer. This is because people in power do not understand what being a young person in Lewisham in 2006 is like. I want to help Lewisham Council understand our perspective.
I know what it is like for me living in Lewisham but I am only one person. Nonetheless I am one person who is fully prepared to get out there and find out what everyone else thinks.
If elected, I would strive to work between the Council and the young people to start projects up to make our lives better. For example the dispersal order means young people in Lewisham centre get moved on. But to where? They have not been provided with anything else to do. I would fight for the provision of activities that we actually want. Get young people to meet each other through common interests, organising tournaments and competitions in the unusual things. Possibilities such as DJ sets, fashion shows or music show cases.
These are just my ideas though, and I am ready to work for any of yours.

Roneish MYERS

Being Young Mayor would be an amazing experience. I’m standing because I want to make a difference to the youth in the borough. I’m the best person for this because I’m very motivated, very determined and committed to improve things for youths to do within the community.
I’m a very reliable, responsible and well organised person. I attend Second Wave performing arts school. I’ve met many young people who have many ideas that they like to do. Knowing this I can put their ideas forward.
I’ll be the voice for the young. If I was given this opportunity I will make a change e.g. to teenage pregnancy, crimes youth commit, etc. The way I would set about achieving this is by organising relevant teen activities, social events and educational talks, debates and issues that may affect them.
I also believe in organising events for the less able, and those special needs and disabilities because everyone matters. I’ll be communicating with young people by keeping in contact with secondary schools and colleges to make everyone aware of what’s happening in their community for them.
I believe that my ideas to improve Lewisham would be most appreciated.

Education brings an important role in life but not the only way to success. There are also some important things we young people can do and be given credit in such as dancing, acting and sports.
This makes me strongly want to become Young Mayor. I would like to have an impact on my community, do my part to inspire young people around me and enhance the community around me.
I’m able to socialise with many type of people which in effect will give me an overview of what young people in Lewisham want in their surroundings. As Young Mayor I will be able to express the needs of the young people in my community and also collect the feedback to make sensible and positive changes.
I want to help young people in the community get what they want. One of the ways I could do this is by setting up a radio station where young people can get involved in what goes on in the community. Another way would be to have shows that showcase Lewisham talent and give young people a focus.
I am passionate about Lewisham and hope you will consider me as your Young Mayor.

Eliot PEARSON

I believe I can make a difference to your lives.
I will be trying to make more people aware about youths, and what they’re really like, not just what they look like. I’m trying to do these things because many times I’ve been followed around shops by security guards.
Also, I will be trying to get activities to do for all youths, not just ones with special talents, and if there are youths doing things there will be less young people on the streets which will make them safer.
Another policy will be to try to get a talent show which would run annually for different talented people to express themselves.
So remember my name in that polling station and vote Eliot!

I am standing because I have developed a love for politics. I have done this by reading the paper and watching the news. Another reason is because I can debate properly. I can get my point across and listen to others. For the young people I would like to create a safe, clean environment for recreational activities.
I would like to encourage more young people to do something with their lives. I am not like most politicians who say things and never do them. Another thing I would like to do is to create more workshops for the school holidays.
I think I am the most sensible and responsible person for the job. Furthermore I am committed to everything I do and would have the same commitment for this job. I also think I am the best person for the job because I have never been late for school and I rarely have days off.
I am the perfect person for the job so please give me the chance and I will make a difference for you.

Luziane TCHIEGUE-NOUTA

I always hear my friends say, ‘I went down Streatham’ or ‘I went to Croydon’. I ask myself “What’s wrong with Lewisham?!” So, I was thinking as your Young Mayor, I would do the following….
I’d set up a youth gym with sports equipment and training sessions too like kickboxing. The gym would also have a chillin’ space with computers and a jammin’ space for us to hang with friends and play pool and stuff. It would need to be decorated, and that would be done by us, in our style, e.g. graffiti. And why does Lewisham have no cinema? I’ll bring open-air big screen cinema to Lewisham. There are open-air cinemas in Southwark and Lambeth sponsored by big business. I’ll work with those businesses and we’ll have great films showing in Lewisham Parks next summer.
The Young Mayor stage at People’s Day was brilliant. I want to make it better! I'll open it up to comedy, drama, dance, as well as music. I’ll also set the stage up across Lewisham parks each weekend of the summer.
I want to be YOUR mayor. I promise to involve you and I'll value your opinion. I'm strong, confident and direct. VOTE Luziane!
