May 2007

The Care Leaver’s Award. This event was to reach out to young people in care who achieved well in their GCSEs. Siobhan and I were invited. We were also asked to present awards to people in a category. I loved this event as I met performers such as Lee Henry, Nathan, Aml (the sexiest guy from The Bill) and Egypt. I thought this event was meaningful as it made me realise that not all people in care end up…. I don’t know. Well what I’m trying to say is that it’s good for people to recognise that there’s a great number of youths in care that are achieving.

The Gun and Knife Crime conference/ this event earned me a space in a newspaper. I delivered a speech about gun crimes and how it felt it was affecting society. This was a chance for concerned parents, uncles, aunts and young people to express how they felt. It also gave them the opportunity to help the authority on how to tackle this serious, on going, problem. I was invited to speak at other events as well and was proud of myself.

The Young People’s Question Time. This was just like question time, broadcast on the BBC. I was invited to take part in a young people’s version of the programme as a panellist. I was the only young person on the panel so I was kind of nervous. Later on, I found out there was no need to be nervous because I answered the questions well and I was really thoughtful when delivering my answers. We covered issues such as gun and knife crimes, (as usual) religion and boundaries, Operation Trident and other things. I did some networking with other panellists, I really enjoyed it!

Womens’ Week. I chaired a questions and answer session with Diane Abbott MP. This was a session with 200 people from across London. They were more interested in the Young Mayor project than in the politician! I met Sybil Phoenix (community organiser). It was a real privilege to meet her.

‘The Crime Sound’ for Lewisham

July 14th is the long awaited return for Lewisham People’s Day 2007. The past crime and garage scenes at People’s Day has always blown away the crowd. 2006 was a great example of the PZJ project compiled by Crimey Cadets, Fatal Assassins, Top Cat Kamp and Hoodfella Gang who ‘drawed’ a rush of the crowd and this year’s could by overcooked by even more fresh crime talent.

J&G representing the underground scene for youngsters in the Blue Borough are performing on the Young Mayor’s stage for People’s Day. Names like Trinity Wides, Baby Fusion, Yanga Cashy, Tention C, Greeney Kid and many many more are performing at the Young Mayor’s stage – they are forces to be reckoned with in the Grime and UK Hip Hop scene in Lewisham.

This year’s People’s Day is the year to show off the talents of Lewisham through the ‘open mic’ stage. This is a new appearance, so if you’ve got talent come along!

Quality Guaranteed! Trust me, I auditioned and judged!

27 November 2006

Hi everyone. This is my first blog, and I just want to let you know what I’ve been up to over the past few weeks. I met Ken Livingstone with Siobhan. He was really nice, and it was amazing to see how many people were constantly around him telling him what to do and where to be.

I’ve also really enjoyed this past month, meeting loads of new people and learning more about the issues facing young people in Lewisham. I think the next few months are going to be really interesting, as we’re going to have to see what the priorities are in our area and how to be original with any solutions that we might have.

Luziane's Statement

"I always hear my friends say, ‘I went down Streatham’ or ‘I went to Croydon’. I ask myself “What’s wrong with Lewisham?!” So, I was thinking as your Young Mayor, I would do the following...

I’d set up a youth gym with sports equipment and training sessions too like kickboxing. The gym would also have a chillin’ space with computers and a jammin’ space for us to hang with friends and play pool and stuff. It would need to be decorated, and that would be done by us, in our style, e.g. graffiti. And why does Lewisham have no cinema? I’ll bring open-air big screen cinema to Lewisham. There are open-air cinemas in Southwark and Lambeth sponsored by big business. I’ll work with those businesses and we’ll have great films showing in Lewisham Parks next summer.

The Young Mayor stage at People’s Day was brilliant. I want to make it better! I’ll open it up to comedy, drama, dance, as well as music. I’ll also set the stage up across Lewisham parks each weekend of the summer.

I want to be YOUR mayor. I promise to involve you and I’ll value your opinion. I’m strong, confident and direct.
