Deputy Young Mayor 2005-2006 Dami Benbow
Fairtrade (Jun 06)
On 9 June Dami and one of his advisors, Lanté, attended a Cocoa Summit at Greenwich University campus.
The summit was organised by Trading Visions and focused on the reality of cocoa bean farming. Dami gave a speech about the potential for young people to make a difference and how it only takes one person to come up with the idea and find a few friends to start making changes. Dami then joined youth delegates from across London to find out about and discuss the difference Fairtrade makes by enabling farmers to get a fair price for their crop and therefore improve life in their families and communities. Young people from Ghanaian cocoa farming families were there to talk first hand about the benefits fairtrade brings to them and many of the delegates shared examples of how they had encouraged Fairtrade products to be bought in their schools. Finally the group wrote a Chocolate Challenge Manifesto calling for more Fairtrade.
This manifesto was presented to the Secretary of State for International Development, Hilary Benn and the Head Chocolate Buyer and the Head of Socially Responsible Trading at Sainsbury’s. Young People making a real difference!!!
Portage Fun Day (Jul 06)
Dami opened this Fun Day for children with special needs and their families. He then stayed around meeting people who use the service and workers who run it.
Dami's Statement
"Through me you can improve safety on the streets. We can increase the amount of music and drama facilities so bands can have free space to play music and where people can set up drama performances. We can improve transport by the re-timing of traffic lights (so that they are not too long) and by increasing bus services during school rush hours. We need to improve existing sports facilities and add new youth groups. The state of litter in streets can be changed by special educational sessions in schools and youth groups. We’ve been through all of my policies. I have the determination to change things and I will fight for what is right. Remember if you don’t vote you can’t complain. For you have the power. You have the right to change the state of Lewisham."
