Young Advisors Discuss Voting at 16

"On the 10 th January myself, Koemi, Dawit, Nathan, Troy-Angel, Rebecca, Dami and Wilf-Young Mayor, went to Westminster to a debate on ‘Votes at 16’. This took place between 4 and 6 pm. This was a very insightful debate and I really enjoyed it thoroughly. The main point, which was made, was ‘Why isn’t it possible for us to get a chance to vote at the age of 16?’ Lord Lucas and Members of Parliament were there and in agreement with us that once at the age of 16, we as young people should be able to vote.

At the beginning, we got split up into different groups to put all of our questions down on a piece of paper then come up with 2 questions to ask the panel which included Harriet Harman, the minister responsible for constitutional affairs which covers this issue. This was done well and all of the groups except for 1 had asked a question to do with why can’t we vote at 16. However, we would need to understand that everyone has his or her own opinions and we need to respect these."

Beacon Visitors hear what Lewisham’s Young People are achieving,

The London Borough of Lewisham has been short listed for a prestigious national award as a Beacon council in the area of Youth Participation.
