Young Citizen's Panel

Citizens’ Panel is a group of people that the Council, health service, police, colleges and others contact to get their views on important decisions that need to be made. A Young Citizens’ Panel has been set up - it will deal with issues affecting young people in Lewisham.

YCP Newsletter

"Hi everyone, my name is Careen and I will be your new editor for the YCP newsletter. I have been a member of the Young Advisors, Young Commissioners and Peer Evaluators group and will try my best to keep you up-to date with all that's going on in Lewisham."

Peer Evaluation

As trained Peer Evaluators, this summer we were asked to evaluate the Summer’s Alive activities in Lewisham. We randomly picked some activities to evaluate and evened out the visits between us and went to different places.

In the end, we visited 8 different types of activities which ranged from Performing Arts to Adventure Playgrounds. All the activities were funded by Lewisham Youth Service and we had to evaluate how good they were.

After finishing all the visits we had 2 full days at Oakridge Participation Centre writing a report up for Dave Dowie who is head of the Youth Services. We will then get paid for our work.

Peer Evaluation is something to do, where you get to know about all the youth clubs and stuff that is going on. You meet new people and get training in useful skill. It’s like work experience and it looks good on your CV.

Now that we’ve done this we are going to train other young people to become Peer Evaluators and look at stuff going on in Lewisham.

Contact Lewisham Young Citizens Panel if you want to know more about being a Peer Evaluator.

Troyangel, Peer Evaluator, 16.

What have we done?

GMC Consultation

One session consultation about GMC guidance to doctors regarding services to young people and their rights and expectations around confidentiality particularly. Members of the panel discussed the need for Doctors to respect young people and take them seriously. Their input will contribute to guidance being produced for doctors currently. The young people also reviewed how the plans being made for the guidance and decided that the times when a doctor had to break confidentiality were acceptable because they protected the young person. However it was noted that there had to be exceptional circumstances and sensitivity in how things were dealt with.

April 2006

Environmental Consultation

In April, a questionnaire was sent to the entire panel asking about attitudes and ideas around recycling, chewing gum and litter. All members who responded were entered into a prize draw and 3 winners were picked at random. These winners then met with Paul and Colin at Environmental Services at Lewisham Council where they heard how the questionairre results are being used and more about current campaigns against chewing gum litter. The YCP members shared more of their ideas for improving our environment in Lewisham. Jess and James are each pictured receiving their prize goody bags from Dami, the deputy Young Mayor who is spearheading an environmental project with some of the money from this year's £25,000 Young Mayor budget. The recycled bags contained a selection of stationery, coasters, booklets and a computer mouse mat all made from recycled materials.
